Lubricant is important for a few different reasons. Sometimes it’s as simple as our brain not sending the signal to our genitals that we’re aroused. Using lube in this instance can help you get into your fun activities sooner. Lube also reduces friction, creating a more enjoyable and comfortable experience, and helps prevent condom breakage. Some lubricants can also help keep a steady PH balance, contain natural aphrodisiacs which help create natural lubrication, and can even create fun sensations such as warming or tingling.
Now you may be thinking “Well who cares about all that? Can’t i just use coconut oil?” and “Why do I need to spend money on expensive lubricants when spit can work?”
Using lubricant designed specifically for sexual activity is a safer, smarter option, especially when it comes to long term use. Using alternatives such as coconut oil, olive oil, or aloe vera can work as a one off solution, if you need it in a pinch, but all of these alternatives can cause irritation, yeast infections, or allergic reactions. ADDITIONALLY, all of these are NOT condom safe and will break down the material. Ideally, saliva, even though it won’t last and dries out, is the best “quick” alternative.
There’s 3 main types of lubricant. Water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based. Special shout-out to hybrid lubes, too (that makes 4 lube types). Water-based lube you can use with all types of toys, can be used for most types of play (anal, oral, vaginal). Water-based is the best, most versatile option. Silicone is NOT compatible with silicone toys, but is a good option for “P in V” or “P in A” penetration, lol. Silicone lubricant can be used with other material toys, such as body safe glass and metal, abs plastic, tpr/tpe, and pvc. Silicone lasts a bit longer, so you don’t have to keep reapplying, but it’s a bit more difficult to wash off. It’s also great for any water play, hehe. I’m going to skip over oil-based for a second and go straight into hybrid lubricants. Hybrid lubes are a water-based lube with a bit of silicone added in. So, they have all the great qualities of water-based, but perform more similarly to silicone. Hybrid lubes are compatible with silicone toys since the silicone content is lower, HOWEVERRR it’s important to do a patch test at the bottom of your toy.
I personally am not super knowledgeable in oil-based lubricant. There’s also not much out there about it online either. Oil based is like silicone based in terms of longevity. They’re more moisturizing, and are not condom safe, though. There’s not too many oil-based lubricants on the market to my knowledge. That’s also probably why there isn’t a lot of information out there about it either. WHATEVER, THOUGH!!!!
