It’s very important you use body safe objects and products you’re inserting into yourself. I personally feel like the average person may not know the difference between certain materials and ingredients.. So today i will be sharing that with you 🙂
Now,, let’s first discuss the type of TOY materials there are. There’s silicone (most common i’d say), TPE/TPR (thermoplastic elastomer/rubber), ABS plastic, glass, metal, and PVC. These are all the materials i know of and if there’s any that YOU know that are not on this list, tell me. Also it probably shouldn’t be put in your body if it’s not listed because i’m always right……
Now i’m gonna talk about the suspicious materials first because I have more to say about them. FIRST OFF, MY SWORN ENEMY…. PVC!!!!!!!
PVC, also known as jelly rubber, is a porous material and is on the inexpensive side of adult toys. SO, in general porous materials aren’t the best to use because they’re more prone to collecting bacteria if not cleaned and stored properly. Now, I’ve noticed that longer and girthier toys are usually made with PVC, most likely to keep the cost down and affordable for consumers. This also potentially leads to newbies buying PVC toys because of the low price point and the lack of knowledge of better materials. PVC is made of trimethyltin chloride, which is a material you shouldn’t be putting inside of you, and the chemicals in PVC have been linked to causing health issues, such as cancer, when used long-term. NOW NOW!!! “Echo, i can’t afford $60+ dildos.”, “Echo, i still deserve self love for cheap.” *camera pans to you scream crying on your knees* OH MY GAWD CALM DOWN!!!! You can still buy and use PVC toys, but to ensure safety, consider using condoms when you use your toy, and clean before and after use.
A bit of a personal moment now,,, eeek. But my first dildo was PVC and i, being inexperienced in toys, didn’t have proper storage for it. Leading to my toy going MOLDY!!!!! Let this be a warning….. (disclaimer; i did not use it in the time i saw the mold and i threw it out).
Now,, another porous material, but less dangerous, is TPE/ TPR. These materials I have noticed are more common in male toys, such as masturbators. These materials are known for having more of a “life-like” texture. So, if something is labeled as “realistic”, “real-thing”, etc, it is most likely TPE or TPR :). Now, from my personal research, these materials don’t contain dangerous, evil chemicals like PVC does but they are porous. Meaning they are more prone to bacteria so once again, proper cleaning and storage is IMPORTANT!!! Using condoms, and cleaning before and after use can help prolong the life-span of these materials and prevent bacteria getting inside the toy.
We shall move on to non-porous materials now,, yayyyyy!!!!!!
Known and beloved silicone. Silicone is probably the most common and safest material to stick into your body. It’s hypoallergenic, durable, and non-porous (no microscopic holes) so it’s safe from bacteria and potential molding…. Easy to clean. Silicone you can clean as you would with any toy, which is with soap and warm water and/or toy cleaner! You can also boil it or put it on the top rack of the dishwasher (only if there’s no mechanics.. if the mechanics can be removed then you have to remove them before boiling or dish-washing). Silicone is definitely on the pricier end but it’s totally worth it. Silicone toys have a longer life span, mostly being due to it’s non-porous composition, easier to clean, AND you can put silicone in your rear (you shouldn’t with PVC and TPE/TPR as they are porous and that’s how you get an infection). You can ONLY use water-based lubricants with silicone toys as silicone lube on silicone toy will cause breakage. There are instances where you can use hybrid lubricants (water-based that has a bit of silicone mixed in), but it’s important to do a patch test on a part of the toy that won’t be used to make sure it doesn’t cause discoloration or other damage.
Not much to say about ABS plastic… it’s non porous. its a hard plastic. It’s usually a material in vibrators and is commonly paired with silicone counterparts.
I’m combining glass and metal because they’re pretty much the same. This is NOT your standard glass and metal, that would be dangerous. You have BODY-SAFE glass, which is shatterproof so you don’t have any embarrassing ER visits,, and body-safe metal which is surgical steel (316(L) stainless steel). If you have ANYYY piercings, it’s the same material!! Both are non-porous and can be cleaned in the same way silicone can. Additional pros to glass and metal is that they have more heft to them, providing extra pleasure as it stimulates your G and A-spot “better” by automatically being able to apply more pressure. They’re also ideal for temperature play since both materials obtain cold and warm well!! Silicone also warms up to your natural body temperature after a bit, giving a silicone toy the ability to feel a tad more realistic. I personally am a fan of glass toys.. I’d like to invest in a metal toy eventually 🙂
QUICK GO-OVER FOR LUBRICANT!!! Water-based can be used with ALL toys. Silicone-based CAN’T be used with silicone, but can be used with other materials. Oil-based can be used with silicone toys (patch test) but SHOULDN’T be used with condoms.
