Now,, You’re probably thinking,, “Echo, everybody knows what consent is. this title is stupid and this post is also stupid.” and that is where i say YOU ARE WRONG!!!
Soooo,, getting right into it, consent is a CLEAR, enthusiastic, and freely given “yes”. If you’re unsure at any point if your partner is okay,, check in and ask!! “is this okay?” not only does this reassure and confirm consent, it’s also a super sexy phrase, lol. While these may seem like common sense, unfortunately it’s not.
Let’s go over examples of what consent ISN’T.. Consent ISN’T: repeatedly asking someone to partake in an activity with you until they say yes, hearing “yes” but their body language is closed off and reserved, assuming consent because you’re in a relationship, assuming consent because you participated in an activity previously, your partner agreeing to one thing and you do something that wasn’t discussed prior (ie; agreeing to sex with a condom, but your partner taking it off during the activity without your knowledge), one party being sober and the other party being intoxicated, saying you did so-and-so for your partner so they ‘owe’ you sexual activity, being intimidated into sexual activity, etc
These examples fall into coercion, manipulation, and threats
Sexual activities should also be between individuals of equal power (NOT between an employee and a boss, student and teacher, sober vs intoxicated individuals, partner is asleep/unconscious).
Depending on your country or province/state, there’s laws around consent between underage individuals. This protects the minors in specific cases. Where I live, which is Canada the consent laws allow minors age 12-13 to legally consent to others UP TO 2 years older, and minors aged 14-15 to consent UP TO 5 years older. For both of these scenarios, this age range excludes if the older individual is in a position of power/authority. Unfortunately the age of consent in Canada is 16, so LEGALLY a 16 year old can consent to someone 19+,,, however in my personal and correct opinion, anyone over the age of 19 morally should not be even talking to minors that young in a romantic or sexual manor. If you’re under the age of majority, you cannot legally give consent when it comes to people that are in positions of trust, authority, or dependency over you.
A super cool and awesome thing with consent is that it can be withdrawn at ANY TIME!!!! whether that’s before anything even happens, after foreplay has started, or halfway through your activity! and if your partner makes you feel bad for withdrawing consent then you can non-consensually punch them in their weak spots (half joke) because that’s not cool and falls into the coercion category.
